From observation, Kudos goes down if the post it was awarded for is deleted - which includes when an entire thread goes that contained a "kudos" post. I noticed it recently when a thread I had posted in and been awarded kudos was removed after it later became "unhelpful".
My own preference would be for kudos to only be awarded for helpful or correct posts in support threads rather than for "entertaining" post - purely on the basis that it can then be used to help people chose the "preferred first" answer when presented with a number of suggested solutions to a problem.
The old BT forums had a fairly good system. Points could only be awarded by the person who started the thread and then only in the support sections of the forum. They could mark one post as "correct" - which got X number of points - and others as "helpful" which got fewer points. New members tended to "vote" because they weren't "awarding points" - just ticking a "correct" or "helpful" box. It meant that if you saw someone with a high points score, they had genuinely helped a lot of people and consitently given good advice - so you knew their advice was likely to be solid.
On another ISP's forum I used, they had an anything-goes "points" system and a small number of rather unpleasant people had massive scores because they basically voted for each other thousands of times even if they only posted "Me too" or "LOL". Not a one of them ever posted anything of value and most were rattlesnakes but many newcomers and occasional users assumed that those scores were a sign of quality and often ended-up ignoring better or absolutely correct advice in favour of some very dodgy replies. In the end, there were so many complaints about the system being abused that it was withdrawn.
Having said that, from what I've seen of this forum so far, the balance seems pretty good - Kudos is part thanks and part praise and the people with the really high scores have earned them. Not allowing members to give negative votes is always the best way to go - that gets seriously abused every time. No-one here seems to take Kudos too serioiusly - it's appreciated but not a goal in its own right.

Haven't you cashed yours in yet?

If you notice, most people have chosen not to display kudos under their username. The idea of a community is to help each other and a simple thank you is much more meaningful.
