As a newbie, is there a certain etiquette to giving kudos?

I've only been on a week or so and think I might be overworking the kudos button!

I think the basis is if you find a post helpful or informative then its deserving a kudo.

I myself will give kudos for things I find funny/banterous as I think they'll make a forum as much as helping people.
