I've just started a new contract with O2 and was surprised to find they bill from the day you call them to start it, even before you've received a sim card.
Is it me or does anyone else think this is just plain greedy on O2's part?
Why would you bill someone for network coverage before or even on the day, they dispatch the sim to you? Obviously you can not use their service until you have a sim and I don't think it's beyond them to detect when you first activate / turn on that sim to start the billing. It seems they choose not to do this but to bill from the second you contact them!
I only really noticed as the sim they said they sent out never arrived, so I've been billed for my first 10 days when I haven't even got a sim card.

No it isn't at all greedy, when you get set up give them a ring and they will re-imburse you for any days over paid.
It's only a question of setting up your account so you can use it as soon as possible.
You will only pay for what you have used.
It wouldn't hurt to chase up the sim card.

It's not just O2, Vodafone do the same. I took out a second contract with them but changed my mind and returned it during the calling off period. I was still billed from the date I took out the contract to the date they received the return. When I asked for a refund I got the money back but I wonder how many people don't actually bother.
