But their problem is and has been for the last year or so that profits are down. Perhaps this is their way of trying to make the phone desirable and unique and get people queueing at their doors again. Deprive the networks and ensure their shops rake it in.

Not necessarily... Apple has financing available to consumers so they see no need to rush out their stock to networks so soon. You'll just have to wait, all of you. Or get one from Apple on finance. If you're that impatient, might be a good idea.
