I put the SIM in my old phone (Sony k750i) temporarily and went to "Contacts" -> "Options" -> "Special Numbers" -> "My Numbers" and set the "My Mobile" setting to my ported number, it was the number that the phone came with originally. Then I put the SIM back in my iPhone but "My Number" was still displaying the number that the phone came with and not my ported number which is now tied to the SIM. (Found this info from google and it seemed to work for some but not others.)
I have tried a complete iPhone reset (which took 2h!!!) and still "My Number" is not showing my ported number.
I know this does not affect the iPhone's functionality in any way but it is really annoying that the wrong number is being displayed.
Anyone have any ideas how to get this sorted?

i presume only Pay&Go customers can see their number in the iPhones settings. Im not able to see that option and I have the contract iPhone.
I have a contract iPhone and mine doesn't display my number.
If you want it to display your number, you just need to add a "My Number" entry in the list of own numbers using another phone.

I borrowed someone elses SonyEricson and changed "My Number" on the SIM card using their phone. Afterwards put my SIM card back into my PayandGo iPhone, it then displayed my correct "My Number" and sync back ok with iTunes.
However, I did have to re-enter the details for access O2 payandgo internet.

I've wasted hours trying to follow the hints in this thread. I found my old Sony Ericsson phone (two phones ago!), found its charger (that was the hard part), swapped the iPhone SIM into that and sure enough I was able to edit the number exactly as described. But back in the iPhone, it is STILL showing that old number! In desperation I even tried the full two-hour reset procedure, but the old number still appears like a bad penny! Beats me were the hell it is getting it from! Tried a sync with iTunes, but that just gave it the wrong number too!
Can anyone definitely confirm that they did this and it worked? If so how long after the number change was it?
Why must we be saddled with sloppy, lazy network operators who cannot be bothered to get the details right! Detail matters! Particularly to people like us who pay premium prices for Apple's products!

First I took the sim and changed the number in my old K700i, put it in my iPhone - no change. Tried a sync - still no change. Then I tried an iTunes restore - still no change. Then I tried the full two hour erase proceedure during which time I uninstalled iTunes and every Apple programme as per instructions on the Apple support site, as well as every iPhone back-up that I could find (admittedly I may very easily have missed something somewhere). Reinstalled iTunes and the iPhone - but still the old number keeps cropping up. Short of erasing everything again and trying to install on a completely different computer (which I may try at some point if I can stomach the waiting again) I don't know what to do.

After much web searching suggested that SIM tool kits from other mobiles would enable me to change the My Number field, I tried using a Motorola U9. Trouble is the U9 didn't let my add the field name "My Number", so I think the iPhone just replaced the number. Having read this thread, I tried again, this time using a Motorola Z8. This allowed my to set both the name and number. This time the iPhone accepted the change. Going to phone->contacts I saw "My Number" field get updated after a couple of seconds.
Sync'ing to iTunes, updated the details of the iPhone showing the mobile number.
