iPhone 5 cellular data

Anonymous
Not applicable

I just got my new iPhone 5 today and I'm concerned about the data it uses.

I just started it and downloaded few basic apps and did the various kind of registration etc.., checked FB a little bit and e-mails.

Now I check my usage and it's 280MB!!!

So my questions are:

-If the cellular data is on, does it "waste" data? or if don't actually use the phone it doesn't make any difference? Maybe there some automatic updates or stuff like that?

-Today I downloaded some apps, but usually I just use internet to occasionally browse the web, check facebook and check the transport timetables...

I don't stream videos on youtube or similar. Do you think 1GB is gonna be enough?

I would avoid to have to turn the cellular data off when I'm not actually using internet, being constantly "connected" is one of the strength of iPhone in my opinion so it would be a shame...

Hi,

I have a 1gb data package on my iPhone 5 and am a heavy user and only get close to the limit.

I have only had to buy a bolt on once !

Try to switch to wifi where you can and turn off 3g and mobile data as the iphone flicks from wifi to 3g when the screen goes into sleep mode to save data.

Heres a handy link I used.

http://www.thestar.com/business/personal_finance/spending_saving/2012/11/16/10_ways_to_cut_your_mobi...

Download 'Onavo Count' from the app store as this will help show you whats being used.

My02 will help too.

Go into settings, privacy, location services and toggle off what you dont location services on for.

These are tips ive picked up from other communities and kept them to pass on.

iCloud Backup: Turn it Off except when you need to do a Backup to iCloud…

Otherwise iPhone will automatically do a Backup over WiFi and/or Cellular Network, while it is on Power, and sleeping.

Settings, iCloud, Storage and Backup, iCloud Backup, Off.

System Services: apparently, some of these can be demanding on Cellular Network usage...

Settings, Privacy, Location Services, and scroll down past the notes at the bottom of the list of Applications, and select System Services, and turn them all Off except Cell Network Search.

If the Maps Traffic service is important to you, turn it On, but be warned it may be a bit of a hog.

Siri: every iPhone User now understand how to use Siri…

However you should be aware that Siri support has been expanded significantly in iOS 6, to include operation of your iPhone, to send text, make appointments, find restaurants, make bookings, and handle your dictation.  The catch is that Siri services contacts the Apple Server via the network to translate your voice, do the searches, and return your results.  You can leave Siri On but be aware of using Siri, when you are only connected via Cellular Data, and low on Data Usage remaining…

Settings, General, Siri, Siri, On. by default,...

Mail: you can set up mail to better manage Cellular Data Usage, if it suits your operation…

Settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Fetch New Data, Push, Off, and set Fetch to Manually.

And select, Advanced, and for each Mail Account, Select Schedule, Manually.

Advertising: Settings, General, About, scroll down to Advertising, Limit Ad Tracking, On.

Diagnostics and Usage:  Settings, General, About, scroll down to Diagnostics & Usage, Don't Send, On.

So if I'm at home I can keep the wi-fi on (I use my house wi-fi) and turn 3g on only when I'm out.

Of course during the night I can keep 3g off, as well as when I'm working.

What I'm saying is: If I keep 3g on during the day, but no app opened, it still eats data or not?

When at home I turn 3g and mobile data off. This forces the iPhone to stay on WiFi.

I turn airplane mode on at night when the phone is charging as I have no need to be contacted.

Some apps will update in the background and as such use data.

Make sure you close down your open apps by pressing the home button twice and press the little red circle

These are apps in suspension.

Thanks for the advices.

I downloaded the app Onavo Extend (Data shrinker as I understand..) and I noticed that when using cellular data a VPN icon appeared on top of the screen...

hope it's nothing bad or that's gonna consume even more data.

Thanks a lot

It says the app is for Orange and Vodaphone network users in the app store so im a little unsure if it supports 02 !

Im not keen on the info going through their servers !

But thats just me.

This is a good review.

The VPN apparantly indicates faster speeds, better shrinking abilities and better battery life.

Make of that what you will !
