Won’t connect using mobile data when WiFi is switched off

Over the past couple of months...when I turn my WiFi off my mobile connection doesn’t seem to work. I still have my full allocation of data left so it is definitely not an issue of buying a bolt on. I have tried turning the mobile data and WiFi on and off and turning it on to flight mode and back off. Also switching off/on and taking the sim out.
I have never had problems prior to this.
Any suggestions of what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried your sim in another phone to check whether its a sim issue?
Have you checked your network status? https://status.o2.co.uk/
If all ok then I'm afraid it is going to be a case of calling O2.
