I wear hearing aids, and I keep Bluetooth switched on. While Bluetooth can connect callers’ voices to my hearing aids, they can only hear me if I switch Bluetooth off. Why does Bluetooth prevent my voice being heard? I shall be grateful for an explanation.

Have you enabled hearing aid compatibility in Settings >Accessories >Hearing devices

The hearing aids are paired with the phone, which I think meets your point. I consulted my hearing aids adviser yesterday; she could find no solution that involved the aids. It seems to be just a fact that switching on Bluetooth on the phone makes my voice almost inaudible to callers. The puzzling point here is that it doesn’t switch my voice off altogether.
Thank you for your response.

Not really. I didn't ask if they were paired.
Also, tap on the connection in your bluetooth settings and make sure they are selected as the most appropriate type of connection.

When I go to settings, then accessibility, then hearing devices, the hearing aids are shown as connected. However, when I go to Bluetooth, my FitBit exercise monitor is shown as connected, but not my hearing aids. Under other devices the spindle never stops spinning and never finds anything else.

It could be the hearing aids are not picking your voice up and so the audio for the other person sounds as it does @CharlesLM
I have that with some bluetooth headphones - some mic's are better than others.
Is there an option to use the phone mic instead of the hearing aid's?

Thank you very much for that thought. I had not realised that my hearing aids might be able to serve as the mic for my voice to my callers. That would explain why my callers can only just hear my voice, even when the phone mic is next to my mouth. The minimal sound that they are hearing is via the aids, not the mic, which is conveying nothing. I will explore.
Thank you very much again.
