I use iCloud. Its a really easy way to have your Contacts backed up (amongst other things), and it makes it easy for when you get a new iPhone.
To have your Contacts backed up by iCloud:
1: Go into Settings, scroll down till you see iCloud, touch this.
2: On the next screen you will see amongst other things Contacts. Turn the switch next to Contacts to ON.
Now all the Contacts that are on your iPhone will be transfered to iCloud.
When you get your iPhone 5, you just basically sign in with the same Apple ID that you use on your iPhone 4, and after making sure Contacts is switched on in the iCloud section. All your Contacts will be then pushed down from the iCloud and onto your iPhone 5.

Backup the 4 to itunes and then set up the iphone 5 from the backup again in itunes.
