@Cotoole You don't need to use the new sim. The new sim probably hasn't been activated. All you have to do is put your old sim in the new phone and it should work.

Yes just put your old sim in the new phone. Did you upgrade through O2 or via a third party retailer?

If through O2 swap the sim from your old phone to your new phone and save the new sim as a spare. It is a blank sim.

If through a third party such as CPW, check My O2 that you have only the one account and a new one hasn't been taken out alongside your existing one.

Thanks for your help guys. But when prompted if I need a new sim by 02 I said yes and I’m guessing that’s why they sent it so surely the new sim should work too ?

No @Cotoole it will be blank. This is why you would need to do a sim swap as explained above,

If you want to use the new sim, you can activate it by following the process here http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/

Apart from the change in phone I only have a change in my 4g. I now get 4GB I previously had 3GB. Once i take the sim out of the old 3GB phone and put it in my new phone Will I get my 4GB of 4g?

Yes, the new tariff will be on the old sim card now so you will get all your new allowances.
The changes are made on o2's systems not physically on the sim card.
