Is there a way of retrieving deleted text messages?

If you haven't backed them up, then I don't believe you can. If you have backed up, take a look at this link, as it may be of use to you:

Are they not backed up to your iCloud account?

Hopefully  they should be. If not if you search the apple forum there may be a way.

If you have iCloud turned on and carry out backups to it when on wifi then you may be lucky.

If not and your not estranged from the other party you could ask the receiver of the text to forward it back to you , if they still have it.

The O2 Network won't be able to assist unfortunately.
