Problem getting a network on iPhone in USA

I was recently in Boston but was unable to get any network coverage. I'm on a contract using an iPhone 4S. I tried all the usual things but still couldn't get any coverage. Is there something I need to do?

It's because many explosions have been triggered by using a mobile phone as the detonator, so they turn off the networks to prevent these kind of attacks.

I would have thought in this day and age they would have had another way to get around this glad I don't live in the USA

It sounds as if the OP's phone was not working for a considerable time, so I doubt that the President visiting Boston would have had anything to do with it. If they do block mobile phone signals they only do it in a very limited area where the President is going to be, and he was in Boston for a very brief time.
