I am 12 months into a 2 year contract and no longer get insurance with my bank account. Can I opt to get O2 insurance now?

No matter how protective you are of your phone, some things can't be avoided or foreseen.

If you really want insurance then I'd recommend comparing different banks. Your existing bank may offer you insurance for free (depending on your type of bank) or for a small monthly fee. When I was a student/graduate i banked with Santander and I got mobile phone and laptop insurance free with my current account with them.

Santander don't do that anymore, good idea to check the other banks though.

Oh sorry I didn't know Santander stopped it.

I just looked online and Natwest do phone insurance with their silver, platinum and black current accounts (for a fee starting from £10 per month).

I've got the Nationwide Flexplus account which includes mobile phone insurance for up to 4 handsets at the same address (as well as travel insurance, breakdown cover and extended warranty) and is £10 per month.
