Stab in the dark answer
1 If on an iphone and running ios7 or above all the answers will be in settings> mobile / cellular > here you can turn mobile data off and see by scrolling down what is actually using the data.
2 if an iphone before ios 7 the same but no data usage break down (apps available for that)
3 if not an iphone selec the correct section of the community

I have an iphone 4s - not updated to 7. I have 600mb data. i don't know what you mean by operating system - I am not (clearly) very technical minded. Sorry! Also am at work so had to go offline. I have gone into settings/general/cellular and switched Cellular Data to off - is that what I was meant to do?

as you have an iPhone , the operating system would be iOS
now you switched your mobile data off, your phone won't be using your allowance, try and use wifi as much as possible to avoid mobile data usage

Ok so know we all know the advice i gave has stopped you using mobile data.
ios 7 will give you a breakdown by app / system usage so I would upgrade to that when next on wifi or connected to itnes or download one of the data recording apps.
600mb data that is a strange amount thought they were 100mb 500mb 750mb 1gb and now 2 5 8 gb
But by turning cellular data (american british selected) off no mms / vvm will work or any data away from wifi.

Main thing is to ensure location services are toggled off and data reports to Apple.
