unlocking problem with o2 unlock code on HTC M8

tricky one this....

i bought an HTC M8 on o2 contract about a year ago. i got my unlock code from last november, and held onto the phone until recently when i got an LG G4. 

i decided to sell my HTC a week ago as its no longer needed, and sold it as unlocked as i had an official o2 code. a guy purchased it, he is on EE, but i couldn't unlock it for him at the time of sale as his sim was a micro sim and the M8 needs a nano sim.

so i told him to get a replacement nano sim from EE which he did. he lives quite a distance away so its not feasable for either of us to meet and sort this out at the moment.

when he put in his EE sim into the M8 i sold him, he said it asked for a sim network unlock pin, but would only allow him to enter 4 numbers and not 8. (i gave him a printout of the o2 unlock email i received to avoid error). 

basically it now says network unlocked on the phone, but he can still see the sim network unlock pin request....

what gives? after 3 goes unsuccessfully does it lock back to o2 again? why would the phone only allow spaces for 4 digits when it requires an 8 digit unlock code??

any advice is much appreciated.

A netlock is not 4 digits, a sim card pin is... So that would be my guess, it wasn't asking for the unlatching code but the sim card's pin ....

that makes sense. im thinking since he got a new EE sim card, its maybe asking him for a 4 digit sim unlock code first, since he would be putting his new nano sim into a different phone....said he tried 0000 but EE's default is 1111...now lost contact with the buyer...one of those days....

Hope he hadn't tried too many times or he may end up needing a new sim. Not sure if EE use the same protocols as o2 to be honest.

Definitely sounds like his sim card security pin.
