If it comes back when you are walking to the shops, could it be a problem with a mast in your area? You can check the network status online via O2 website.
Have you tried cleaning the sim card? Even better, pop into an O2 store and ask them to sim-swap you whilst you wait. You can request it online but I did it in store a few months ago and walked out of the store 10 mins after walking in with my phone already working again.
Failing this, you could request an unlock code from O2, then unlock the phone and try another network sim card in it, just to see if the problem is O2 or the phone.

Check that the APN settings are as listed here, a few times these were being sent out with errors:

Reset the network settings in the phone.
Soft reset.
Hard Reset.
Be sure to make a back up of your data as this typically deletes your saved data.
Google or YouTube will tell you how to carry these out.
If you start thinking about getting the phone checked out then I would suggest you contact HTC first and no 02 repairs.
Take care.
