Hi

Most phones update apps etc in the background and uses location in some apps too like weather etc

You could Turn off mobile data when on wifi etc

Some phones have data tracking in their settings which shows what app has used what data.

Which phone do you have ?

Turn off mobile data and just use WiFi - You won't be charged or use data for anything then.

Your other option is to increase your data allowance on your tariff. 500mb a month should be sufficient for a light data user.
