Synchronising e-mail between my PC and NEXUS 7

Anonymous

Hi all,

This is not strictly relating to a mobile telephone issue but the solution you may have adopted will help me I think.

I have bought a NEXUS 7. My aim is to synchronise e-mail between it and my PC so my wife is no longer left on her own in the living room watching TV while I 'play' on the PC.
This ability is taken for granted by my bosses with their work e-mail.

I use Outlook on my PC and thought it would be simple to set up. (I read e-mail on my PC, not via webmail).
I now find O2 uses POP3 which means once an e-mail is downloaded it is deleted from the O2 sever and therefore no longer available for synchronisation across devices.

How do people get round this? Do you use webmail? (Not my preferred option)

Or, do you use Google mail or some other solution? If so please can you teach me?

I have an O2 and a Hotmail e-mail address. Ideally I'd like to keep these and be able to have them and my e-mail contacts (stored in Outlook on my PC) 100% synchronised between the PC and the NEXUS.

Thank you,
rabbituk

It was a long, but enjoyable journey wink

Hello MI5, Toby,

So near and yet so far............

Although your instructions are clear my journey as a newbie has not been so easy.......

I tried to import my contacts to gmail on the web (via the PC) but I went to the wrong place and it kept asking for an e-mail address - Gmail is NOT intuitive to me!

So I tried importing to hotmail thinking I'd import the contacts to Google from there. Instead Hotmail locked me out and made me set up new password, security etc and then failed to add the contacts anyway.

So, back to Google.

I eventually found the location to add contacts via the .csv file, it imported but the contacts were unusable. I could see names and addresses on the screen but they didn't seem to be linked. So I ended up copying and pasting each e-mail address against each contact name..........at least I didn't have to type them.

Then I tried to use my NEXUS and of course couldn't see the Contacts.

So I tried the other link you gave but this didn't help. It didn't seem to do anything and now I think I probably need to add the contacts to this application in some way (which I hadn't done)

Then I discovered the 'People App' on the NEXUS (again so non intuitive to me). But now I am there nearly.....................my contacts exist in gmail on the NEXUS.....BUT,

The gmail app on the NEXUS does not seem to allow a dropdown box to select contacts. So if I want to forward a mail I have to remember all who I want to receive it (I don't know until I see the list usually). I also read Groups doesn't work but this would be no good for me because the groups change depending on who sent the original mail to me.

So I have a couple more questions if you can stand it......

Do you know I can get Gmail on the NEXUS to allow me to select e-mail addresses from a drop down box?

If not, can you recommend a different e-mail client on the NEXUS that would allow it. (No doubt I will have to understand the other link that I failed with above to import the contacts........)

Sorry it's not over. But I'm hopeful it might be soon.

In the mail apps (I think they are all the same) you just start typing the name of your contact and the list will appear to choose from that match what you've typed to your address book.

Hello MI5,

Thank you for your very much appreciated help.

I know what you mean about starting to type the contact name but I am used to selecting from a list in Outlook (and therefore do not consider who I am going to mail until I go through the list). I was hoping there was something similar you may have known of on Android.

Once again, thank you for helping me with what I thought would be far simpler than it turned out to be

If I find something that does what I want I'll let you know...............
