Sounds as if they've been accidentally deleted. Is there a mutual friend of the deleted contacts that you can get the numbers from?

Lost them where?
Are they on phone but not on Google or vice versa?
Google only syncs what is in phone memory so if contacts are on sim card they won't sync back to Google.

Lots of reasons.....

They may not have phone numbers attatched and phone is only showing contacts with phone numbers?

Phone not set to show all, etc....

Looks like you have deleted them somehow then.
Try switching back to the old Google contacts and see if they are on there?
