Edge contacts work well, where the edge lights up if a contact calls, useful if in a non curved case. Edge night clock is a clock that can be viewed side on, edge feeds show various news feeds side on.

But mostly because it looks the mutts nutts

But why the need to look at your handset from the side when you have a big screen on the front? I've never been in a situation and wish i could see something on the narrow side!!

I imagine the clock and news feeds show while the phone is asleep.

When it's on the side at night, hence night clock lol.
The edge alert is good if it's in a flat fronted case, a pulse goes up the edge in whichever colour you chose for that contact so you can tell who's calling without even opening the case.

For me, I can see the time while still lying down in the morning and then after the alarm I can see the news headlines while the phone is flat and I'm still in me pit.
There's genuinely only few benefits but if you're being honest, half the features on any handset aren't really beneficial, with the edge, it's definately more about the look and uniqueness of it. The thing just oozes desirability.
