I did a factory reset a couple of days ago, and ever since then the Messaging app has stopped displaying a notification in the status bar, and it doesn't play the ringtone which I set.
I thought I'd try and cure it by doing another factory reset last night, but it's still the same.
In the Messaging settings the "make sounds and show icon" is ticked, the ringtone I want is set, and "also vibrate when notified" is ticked. In the Application Manager "show notifications" is also ticked.
The only way I can find out whether I've got text message (SMS) is by going into messaging itself.
Anybody got any ideas what's happened. It's driving me mad at the moment.

I've installed Go SMS.
How long did you wait before you deleted it?
I'm just negotiating a test message.

So how do know so much about Android?
Uninstalled Go SMS and Messaging appears to be working. Why would that happen?
I'm going to wait 24 hours before I mark this as solved, and start dishing out the kudos. I don't trust it.
Thanks very much for replying so quickly.

This has been asked before, all we know is we plug in a very special device and off he goes!

Oh boo hoo. I'm crying.
Got a text from Royal Mail at 08:50 telling me a parcel would be delivered today. It came through fine. Got the lock screen preview box, ringtone played OK, and the notification in the status bar came. Great I thought, it's back to normal.
I sent my wife a text to let her know a parcel was due. Thirty seconds later she texted me back. The phone played a generic ring (bubbles I think, certainly not the ringtone I've set), vibrated, but no lock screen preview box, no expected ringtone, and no notification in the status bar.
Could this be anything to do with the set up of the senders phone (i.e. my wifes, I'd love to blame her)?
I've gone back to Go SMS Pro for the time being. Until MI5 comes up with another plan. I'm hoping to presuade him into making this problem his lifes work. The upside for him would be he could write a book on it later.

The wife's phone is an S2, and yes the message appears in the inbox of Messaging. I'll have to check whether the red dot is showing.
I'm still using Go SMS Pro, but I'm going out tonight with a few friends, so I'll uninstall it, go back to the Messaging app, ask them to send a few texts, and see what what happens. I'll keep a mental note of exactly what the phone does when a message is received.
I'm definitely warming to Go SMS Pro, mainly because it works. Does anyone know of any other free SMS messaging apps I could try? I've still got this suspicion about Hangouts, as this only seems to have occurred since their last update. However as no one else is complaining about the same problem I suppose it's the phone.
