I did a factory reset a couple of days ago, and ever since then the Messaging app has stopped displaying a notification in the status bar, and it doesn't play the ringtone which I set.
I thought I'd try and cure it by doing another factory reset last night, but it's still the same.
In the Messaging settings the "make sounds and show icon" is ticked, the ringtone I want is set, and "also vibrate when notified" is ticked. In the Application Manager "show notifications" is also ticked.
The only way I can find out whether I've got text message (SMS) is by going into messaging itself.
Anybody got any ideas what's happened. It's driving me mad at the moment.

I tried to add some MP3 files to the SD card on Sunday morning, but they wouldn't transfer. Then when I rebooted the phone it gave me the SD card is damaged message. I've had this before with my old S2, and the only thing to do was to accept the SD reformatting, which is what I did. However I had some apps installed on the SD, and when I'd reformatted, their icons were left on the apps screen, greyed out with the small SD logo on them. They wouldn't delete by dragging and dropping, and they couldn't be deleted from Apps Man, so I had to do a factory reset. After the reset I reinstalled the apps which had been deleted, and put some photos and MP3 files on the SD card. They were able to be accessed, so the SD card seems fine. When I was setting up the phone after the reset, the Google verification code text came through OK, and the app was performing normally. After I'd finished installing updates on the apps the functionality had gone.
Need to know anything else just ask.

I actually did a factory reset twice.
The first one was done using the volume up, home, and power buttons, and going into that menu.
When I realised that Messaging wasn't working properly, on Monday evening, I did another using the settings menu method, to try and cure it. To be honest I'd have done that first time, but I'm a bit old school and I forgot the settings menu option was available. I've done a few factory resets on my old S2, and I always used to use the buttons.

Back from the pub. It was quiz night, we didn't win.
Uninstalled Go SMS Pro and used the native Messaging app. My mate sent me a series of around 8 texts, all of which worked perfectly.
Preview pane on lock screen, little red number on the Messaging icon, chosen ringtone played, and a notification on the status bar, everything worked. Perfect.
Will get the wife to text me in the morning, too late now she's in bed.

Should have done that, but didn't.
Hot news though. My wife has just sent three texts, all of which I replied to.
The first two didn't work properly. No preview pane, wrong ringtone, no little red number count on the icon, and nothing in the status bar. However the third one, only 30 seconds later, the app worked just as it should, preview pane, ringtone, status bar notification and the little red counter n the icon.
It seems totally random.

I've got an unlocked Note 2 currently running 4.3 on MK9.
Firmware flashing sounds a bit scary.

Sounds it but it's easy...
Only problem is once you get the "bug" you'll be flashing a different ROM every week
