Messaging App doesn't notify me when I receive a text

Anonymous

I did a factory reset a couple of days ago, and ever since then the Messaging app has stopped displaying a notification in the status bar, and it doesn't play the ringtone which I set.

I thought I'd try and cure it by doing another factory reset last night, but it's still the same.

In the Messaging settings the "make sounds and show icon" is ticked, the ringtone I want is set, and "also vibrate when notified" is ticked. In the Application Manager "show notifications" is also ticked.

The only way I can find out whether I've got text message (SMS) is by going into messaging itself.

Anybody got any ideas what's happened. It's driving me mad at the moment.

I've seem to have cured it.

I uninstalled the latest Hangouts update, and I'm getting text messages appearing in the status bar, and the default ringtone is playing.

Is Hangouts one of Samsung's bloatware masterpieces? I can't seem to delete it completely.

Yes preview messages is ticked.

Service Loading is set to prompt, but I haven't got a clue what that does.

When I'd done the factory reset and I was setting the phone up, the google verification code text came up in the status bar, and the default ringtone played, as usual, but it's not happened since then.

Just noticed it seems to be playing the bubbles ringtone (I think), but nothing in the status bar.

You can't delete it but disabling it will allow you to use the native messaging app. Glad you sorted it.

Just thought I'd bump this back up to the top, and mark it as unsolved.

Despite disabling Hangouts, and for a short time receiving SMS messages on the native messaging app, it's started again, or should I say stopped again.

Messages are being received, but there's nothing in the status bar, and no ringtone. One of my contacts has Viber, and when I received an SMS from that person the Viber "New Popup Message" box came up with the message showing (and it was in Messaging as well).

This is driving me bonkers.

Anybody with any ideas please let me know.

Is the phone setting hangouts as the default sms app?
Check by opening hangouts and hit menu then sms settings and untick the option for hangouts to use sms.

I'd uninstalled the Hangouts update, so the version which was installed (but disabled by me in Apps Man) was the old one which didn't have the SMS function.

I've just updated, and checked the settings in the new SMS enabled version, and it isn't set to handle SMS messages.

The annoying part is that I thought I'd cured it yesterday, as Messaging was back to normal. I'd get the preview pane in the lock screen, a notification in the status bar, and the custom ringtone playing. Today it's back to misbehaving.

I've been trying to think what I've done to the phone today, but I haven't changed any settings, or installed anything.

Now I've updated Hangouts I might uninstall the update (again) to see whether Messaging starts to work. I can't understand why Viber would suddenly start to handle some SMS messages.

I've only got to persuade the wife to send me some test texts. That's trickier than it sounds. She doesn't understand my frustration, and actually couldn't care less.

LOL, I feel your pain 😞
When I've had issues before with the stock message app I have installed a 3rd party app such as "Go SMS".
Once installed, the stock message app usually starts working again and I can delete the 3rd party app.....
