Is it usual to have to pay extra for media messages? Is this when a photo is texted? Why aren't they included in the free texts?

In that case you have different software, my bad.

 

On Settings you should be able to find Applications Manager and have a look for what apps are on the phone and see if any of them are using data without your knowledge.

 

500Mb for emails alone seems too excessive. For future, this is quite  agood 3rd party data monitoring app http://www.onavo.com/

From memory the built in data usage monitor came in with ICS. If you have 2.3.5 you won't have it but if you are on 4.0.3 you will have it. Not sure what the Ace is running these days?
