Is it usual to have to pay extra for media messages? Is this when a photo is texted? Why aren't they included in the free texts?

Yeah, on most tariffs (newer ones) the media messages are charged at 35p per message.
This is because they contain more content than a standard SMS and use more of the network's resources to send them. It is free to receive them however. There are also applications, like Whatsapp, you can use to send them.

This is the question that needs answering.... Back when data wasn't bundled I can see the reason for charging a nominal fee for using data services. However, now data is included (along with free texts) there is no excuse for any network to charge for MMS messages......

I agree - I think networks should take it out of your data allowance. Would be interesting to hear if anyone knew why it isn't.
If we could unify messaging between iMessage, BBM, Google Talk etc. then MMS would become obsolete.

Thanks guys for your helpful answers. I'm new to smart phones and am finding it all a maze. When I bought my phone I was assurred that 500 MB would be plenty unless I was streaming films, gaming, etc. But when I connected to my work email (Outlook) it used up all 500MB in 3 days! Is this normal?
Thanks, Jane

No, it isn't. It must have downloaded a lot of content.
What kind of phone do you have? How many emails did it download from your work email?

I have a Samsung Ace 2. I receive about 40-50 emails a day but most are very short without attachments. The phone was set to download just 3 days worth.
Thanks, Jane

I can't remember the specific software on that phone, but if you go to Settings - is the 3rd option down 'Data Usage'?
If it is - then adjust your cycle appropriately and that should tell you exactly what has used all the data. I doubt 500Mb would be used up entirely by email.

I've had a look at settings but can't find 'data usage'.
