eSIM profile question

So I upgraded to a sim only tariff and downloaded my eSIM, went through all the instructions and now I have two profiles on my mobile service page. My primary number which shows my actual phone number and the eSIM. If I turn off the primary number it says no sim even though I’m supposed to be using the new eSIM profile. Do they work in tandem, do I have them both turned on or will the old physical sim stop working. The process was simple but I’m now left wondering what profile I’m supposed to be using etc. anyone help?

Take out the physical sim and see if the esim activates.
If not, delete the esim and stick with using the plastic sim.
