Unlock phone

Hello, my daughter had my old phone, then switched to a different handset (same number - ending in 984). We sold the old handset and the person we sold it to says it's locked (we sold it as unlocked as we assumed it was). Please release the old iphone 8 rose gold phone from the contract as we are paying it on the iphone 11 instead (same number). Thanks, Martin
