I'm able to use mobile data but no other forms of comms ie text/ calls in Ghana

Ghana is not free to roam in.

Charges here https://www.o2.co.uk/international/using-your-phone-abroad

So you could need credit if PAYG or removal of restrictions if on contract.

Use WhatsApp over wifi to connect to any contacts with WhatsApp.

You really don't want to be making or receiving calls on a O2 mobile phone in  Ghana

Data charges too will be crippling
