I’ve returned from Portugal where I also had poor service and data services with o2
returned back to Uk. Still no service or data

Well you can't blame O2 for reception in Portugal as you had more than one network to choose from. I've found Meo strong followed by Vodafone.
Have you tried the SIM in another phone?
