I have had no service for some days due to work being done in the area.

I can make calls via WiFi but texts are flaky. I am terminally sick and dependent on my phone. Can nothing be done? Am I at least entitled to compensation?

Unless your service is disconnected for a few weeks then there will be no compensation. No network guarantees 100% coverage. Masts are constantly being upgraded to give an improved service.
