2 contracts …. Need to cancel old one but keep number

I got a new phone & contract for my daughter. She wanted to keep her old number so just transferred her sim into the new phone rather than cancelling old contract and getting her number ported to the new contract. Can she still do this now as the contract has been running for a few months…. She has not used any data on the new contract  at all
