I'd go with turning off 3g and mobile data and use wifi where you can.

thanks but im not realy prepared to spend extra ill just take my chances paying for wifi

Depending on where you're going, apart from some hotels, most WiFi is free, if you can find it. If you really need to use your phone you can always get a local PAYG sim for the time you're away. Just make sure your phone is unlocked before you go.
