O bought a new samsung phone yesterday with £10 top up included. When I came to check today I have been charged for any calls and texts I have made since yesterday. The website (my o2) says I need to top up another £10 to get my monthly allowance. Why is this?

It maybe that some of the credit was used and there was insufficient credit on the phone to pay for the service. Any unused credit after you top up remains on the phone and carries over if you wish to use other services.
It can also be put towards the following month's payments.

Thanks for your quick reply jonsie. I understood that the allowance for calls etc would start immediately I bought the £10 top up with the new phone, so it wasnt until I had used some texts and calls that I checked the balance

There may have been some data used when setting up the phone initially when apps update etc. This would eat into the credit unfortunately. Hopefully from now on you should have no problems.
