Groups or 5 should be OK - It's all down to how the individual phone converts the message and how the characters are counted.

I have been unable to find any mention in the O2 website of charges for sending an sms message to multiple recipients (that is, using the Search facility).  Can you help please   @MI5 or @Anonymous ?

Does the charge incurred by the OP apply even if  "included" text allowance has not been exceeded?

Just for clarity @MI5  Do you mean that sending one text with 5 recipients should OK as in "not charged". The OP seems annoyed that he was charged, but are you saying he might have avoided the charge by sending in groups of up to 5?

There may not be anything specific as different phones handle multiple messages differently - Doing a guide to include all the variables would be virtually impossible...

Alternatives are available such as iMessage for iPhone users or viber and what's app for example to send messages to multiple recipients but those need to be used by all parties.

Yes, that is my suggestion - but as I keep saying, it is phone dependant.

Thanks @Anonymous The implication as far as I can determine from that useful link is that sending to 25 or fewer recipients should not incur a MMS charge (provided of course the actual sms is within the allowed character count.)
