I have just started my contract ( 2days ago) and i send a couple of messages to family letting them know my new number and included a smiley in the message.   Today i checked my o2 app and found i had been charged 33pence for each message.  But i have unlimited calls and text.  So i called o2 costumer services to find out wot was going on.   This is wot i was told..... because i included an emoction in my messages O2 ARE CHARGING ME 33PENCE A MESSAGE BECAUSE AN EMOCTION IS CLASSED A PICTURE MESSAGE (MMS).   WOT A JOKE!  i have nerver come across this with any other network. I was with three and was never charged for sending an emoction in a text message.  Ive only been with o2 for a short while.  Think i made a mistake joining o2 :smileysad:

Hi @Anonymous

Welcome to the forum

Most networks charge for sending MMS. It is something that catches a lot of people out sadly...

Here is a link to show you how to avoid this in future

As you only just started your contract two days ago, you're still within the cooling off period and have the option to cancel your contract and switch to another provider.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

Have a read of the link above and you will see it's not quite as simple as just sending a smiley. There are a number of other factors involved.
Depending on your phone there are also a number of ways you can get a warning or prevent it from converting to MMS.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

I would plead ignorance to O2 and ask them as goodwill gesture to cancel the charges. Threaten to leave if they don't.

How many people did you send the text to?
Not meaning to discredit the o2 support staff but multiple recipients is more likely to convert texts to mms rather than a single emoticon.
