Unexpected Issues - O2 Status

Hi,

Just checked the status in http://status.o2.co.uk/ and they have mentioned there is an unexpected issue that is on going at the moment.

'We've got some problems with our phone service right now. Some phone numbers might not be working at all. Those numbers could be anywhere in the UK or abroad.'

My network has been down from 11am this morning. (Glasgow) Was told by online chat that it was a sim fault and to go in store and replace it. Was told in store that it was a technical issue and it would be on in 1hr.

5hrs later and nothing.

Have had to tether to my girlfriends iPad all day (more data charges)

Pathetic..

The original issue was with 2 of O2's HLR's (Home location registers) which were down. The HLR is a database that holds the following information-

Details of each mobile phone subscriber allowed to use the core GSM network
Details of all the SIM cards issued by the network
Each SIM has a unique identifier (IMSI) which is a primary key to each HLR record

O2 have 6 HLRs so users affected will be on one of the two affected HLRs.

Some progress has been made since this original information although it seems the situation is ongoing for many users.

Can you give a source for this?

I've had intermittent problems for the last twelve months. My contract is up in November - seriously considering moving to another provider.
