I will be in America for several months, and want to know if I can suspend my account. I want to keep the phone number as I will be returning to the UK, but want to put my account and mobile number on 'hold' so to speak. Is there an email address for O2 to contact?

No email and no way to suspend your account either, sorry.
Just leave your phone at home and make sure you have a direct debit in place to pay the basic monthly bill whilst you are away.

Only if out of contract you could transfer number to payg then transfer back to contract on return but if in contract no option apart to pay each month
