My son has just left for south Africa.  How can he get a reduced tarriff whilst abroad ?

There are no reduced tariffs for overseas usage. If he is on contract he can use TuGo over wifi which will use his monthly allowances rather than paying international rates.

Otherwise the best option is to use free apps such as Whatsapp or Viber, again over wifi, but all parties would need to have the app installed.

Another way for cheaper usage would be to use a local sim card if the phone is unlocked.

I would have looked into this before I went but unfortunately there are no reduced tariffs available

If The OP is already abroad then I agree tugo is the way to go. Of course it depends how many calls he is likely to make and receive (as you pay to receive on mobiles when abroad).

If he is just calling home the tugo definitely
