I currently have a month by month sim only contract, I want to upgrade but the best deals are for new contracts and I want to stick with o2. Carphonewarehouse said I can take out a new contract and then switch my existing number to the new contract and then close the month by month. Is this true? I was a bit sceptical and don't want the hassle of having to return the new phone/contract.

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can. No problem at all.

Hi, did this work? I am in similar position where I have seen great o2 deal on carphone warehouse but not available as upgrade. After speaking to cpw several times, i keep getting told yes or no that i will be able to transfer my number across. don't want to buy the new phone and not able to do it!

Yes you can.
But you need to do it before cancelling your current contract.
