@acresrogerYou get more with a sim only plan as you already have a phone.

With the other offer, you need to purchase a phone and airtime.

When you buy a phone you are committed to a fixed term and are able to take advantage of a new phone therefore they feel (rightly or wrongly) that they can charge you for the privilege

Sim only they want to keep you so offer more in order to do so

What are the consequences if I now buy a sim with 5GB data for £10 a month

Can I just cease paying the airtime on my current contract which runs to July 2022

Maybe paying off the small sum still due on my devise plan as I paid most of the devise plan upfront

It doesn't work like that sadly. You have to pay off the device plan first, and then you can take out a sim only plan which would cancel your airtime on the old contract.

Edited to add, if, as you say, you only have a small amount left to pay on your device, you could pay that off and then choose a sim only plan of your choice. Less expense to you.

Thanks for your help

Just to be clear

How do I pay off my devise plan?

I then order a sim only sim

Can I keep my number

How ?

My airtime plan ceases

I can then buy a new phone if I wish and trade in or sell the old one

You can pay off your device plan instore (if any open by you) or by contacting O2

All numbers in this guide. Guide: Coronavirus Community Help and Support

OR you can choose to UPGRADE if the option is available to you in My O2.

upgrade sim only.PNG

Once you choose your sim only plan, the amount you owe on your device will be added to your basket.
