I'm travelling to Tokyo next month and am seeking any advice on using my iPhone 8 with monthly sim only.

I'll be there for 2 weeks and not sure what to do for the best. I won't need it a lot but some data would be very handy for messaging my daughter, general mapping and travel info - the usual tourist thing.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Dave

You can use o2 travel if on contract for £4.99 a day for 120 minutes, 120 Texts and data usage, which works out a lot cheaper

I used it in Tokyo and Yokohama, and speeds where comparable to the tourist sim card we had as well for the iPad
- Xperia 1V - o2 and Spusu
- Pixel 8 Pro - o2 and Vodafone UK

Hi @PiedPiper keep phone in airplane mode and use WiFi to connect to WhatsApp imessage etc only.

Data and calls are very expensive http://international.o2.co.uk/internationaltariffs/travelling_abroad

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

@PiedPiper

Re O2 Travel: If you've got a Pay Monthly sim, text O2TRAVELto 23336

It's not available on PAYG.

Use WiFi wherever possible, as you will only be charged for O2 Travel on the days you use it.

To ensure you don't incur extra charges, make sure you turn Voicemail off before you travel by dialling 1760.

Enjoy your trip wink

The train system is very good, trains are on time and very clean. Japan is remarkably clean too, I know you will enjoy it. When I went there were three of us and we had a pocket wifi deal from a Thai network. It worked remarkably well, though not that well when the two ladies were off shopping, leaving me desperately looking for wifi. However, Tokyo has free public wifi hotspots so you will be fine there. We had a wonderful week there and travelled extensively on the trains with a weekly pass.Quite expensive although that didn't bother my wife and her daughter rolling_eyes
