Hi I’ve gone from pay monthly and have upgraded to a sim only contract and kept my phone do I have to cancel my direct debit for the one I pay now and will a new one automatically for the sim only contract

Assume you have gone for a brand new SIM only contract rather than upgrading.
If that is the case the Old Contract may still be running.
You will need to migrate your number to the new contract to close that account. Leave that DD in place for now

Do nothing. You new bill will be taken from your current DD with just the adjusted amount.
