I am going to Australia next week for four weeks and taking my IPhone. Given where we are staying I am likely to use phone for downloading data in excess of my storage limit.
what is best way to ensurE I have sufficient storage under my contract which at present is only500MB per month please?
i am aware of bolt ons but not sure what size to use

If as you say you are on contract you can use the TU app for calls and texts back to the UK but only when connected to wifi. Make sure when you open the app the blue dot shows that TU is connected. You can only use this until the end of November though I'm not sure it will allow you to register if you haven't already got it. You can't use the app for data though.
If you opt to use O2 Travel be aware that even one text message will trigger the daily charge.

4 weeks is a long time to use an o2 sim and o2 travel everyday. Firsly is your phone unlocked if not i suggest you get it unlocked before you go then just get and use a local sim pay as you go and connect to one of ther networks.
For the cost of running o2 it would be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand phone and go pay as you go
