I have recently completed my contract with O2 and am now using my iphone abroad on wifi only. What charges may i incur and would I be better off buying a local SIM?

If you are using your phone abroad and only using Wifi as you say..you shouldn't incur any charges at all
Just make sure voicemail is off and data roaming/mobile data remain off at all times...

Using wifi only with mobile/cellular data off and there will be no charges unless using for calls and texts.
Local sim is the best option as long as the phone is unlocked.

Well for keeping in touch with family when I am abroad I use Messenger and Skype all over WiFi. Never costs me a thing.
It's purely personal but I go abroad a lot and wouldn't bother with a local sim because all my contacts are in the UK anyway.....

@Anonymous have you cancelled your contract by giving 30 days notice or have you just gone past the end date? If it's the latter, you would now be on a one month rolling contract. If you haven't gone through the cancellation procedure, here is a guide: http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Pay-Monthly-and-Pay-Go/Cancelling-Your-Contract-A-Guide/m-p/566774/highlight/true#M56526
