If you want to use the phone while you're abroad, make sure it's unlocked before you go and pop in a PAYG sim from a local network in whichever country you're in. If you use the O2 sim abroad you will be charged roaming charges, and your calls, texts, and data will be very expensive.

Yes you will be able to keep your number. If you are P&G you need to make a chargeable call every 6 months before your number is deactivated. If contract, it will just carry on as normal.
