Unfortunately the problem is that Apple won't support a warranty any longer than 12 months.
O2 are bound by the Apple policy.
See the difference between SOGA and warranty here https://community.o2.co.uk/t5/How-to-Guides/How-To-Guide-Difference-between-SOGA-and-warranty-extend... but to be covered for the 6 year period you have to prove a manufacturing fault at the point of sale.
Apple do this deliberately to force customers to take AppleCare+ cover.

As the phone is now out of warranty, you cannot hurt anything by taking it to independent repair shops for quotes.
You may find significantly cheaper repair costs than Apple will charge you.
