have you checked the O2 Status Checker to see if there is a problem in your area?
Have you always had a signal problem on O2?
You need to honour your contract though. It will affect your credit rating if you just stop paying your direct debit.

Hi,
Its always best practice to ensure that any network your interested in gives good performance with network signal and data connection.
A person can do this either by speaking with a friend or family member in the same area on that network or order some payg sims and try them out in an unlocked phone.
If you want to cancel your contract you will need to be within your cooling off period {7 days I believe} or your stuck in the 02 one. A PAC would transfer you back ,but you would also have to pay off the remaining month of the contract.
If Vodaphone ticked all your wants and needs boxes then why move ?
The service isn't fault free which 02 cover in their T&C's.
2 The Services we supply and what you can expect of us
2.1 The Service isn’t available everywhere in the United Kingdom. It isn’t available in all other countries. It may be restricted to certain areas of those countries where it is available. Not all Mobile Phones will be able to receive the Service. We may not provide the Service to Equipment that is not able to receive the Service or is not approved by us. Some Equipment facilities may be available at a later date and additional charges may apply.
2.2 The Service isn’t fault-free; a range of different geographic, atmospheric or other conditions or circumstances beyond our control can impair it. For instance, coverage is affected by things like the thickness of the walls of the building you’re in. It might also depend on how many people near you are trying to use the Service at the same time. For more information about the things that affect coverage and data speeds, please look at the dedicated Network pages of our Website at o2.co.uk/network. You’re entitled to the quality of service generally given by a competent mobile telecommunications service provider, using its reasonable skill and care. We may carry out upgrades, repairs and maintenance works to our network from time to time. Sometimes technical issues or outages on our network can occur. If something goes wrong, we’ll try to fix it quickly.

I've already replied to you after you hijacked someone else's thread...
(Todays lesson is...Always check what the network signal is like in your area BEFORE taking out a contract)

Make an official complaint through the correct channels before talking about not honouring your contract and all the consequences. O2 | Complaint

Did you ever check what O2's coverage was in Inverness before you switched providers?
If you refuse to honour the terms of your contract, the consequences for you wouldn't be very good. A mark would be put on your credit rating, and you wouldn't get a contract back with Vodafone even if you wanted one. I'd think about it carefully instead of doing anything rash.
