Did you turn phone off and on?
Data may momentarily connect before wifi does and hence the charge.

phone was never switched off. when i checked my bill it gives me the times of when i used this data, all i can say is it's a good job i cancelled the travel bolt on, otherwise it would have cost me £20. i cannot understand why this has happened just now and never  before, just seems strange that it occurs since o2 travel started and i cancelled it.

I suggest you call CS and ask them to refund you then.

If mobile data wasn't switched off and the wifi signal was weak it may have triggered the wifi assist. Have you checked the settings?
