Stupid question after years of having an 02 account (and not checking it) but are 02 to 02 calls free?

Only if the tariff you are on includes it. You can check in "MY O2" which will either say Free O2 to O2 or give you the number of minutes in your allowance.
If nothing is shown it will just use your minutes allowance as with calling any other number.
