New sim - keep old number

I have an older phone with a mini sim and want to upgrade to a smart phone which will have a nano sim (or micro at least). The current sim won't break down to nano (older version). So can i get a new (nano) sim and retain the old number, how do i do this !? Thanks in advance.

Best option is a O2 store

They will supply a new sim and swap your number over for you free of charge
